I wish people would acknowledge that Britain doesn’t just mean England, it means Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland too. Britain is the name for all the countries, not just one.
I’m sorry but I’m just a little sick of folk getting it wrong.

Great Britain refers geographically to the island of Great Britain, politically to England, Scotland and Wales in combination. The United Kingdom is the name for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  See:

Review of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971

So I’m here to ask you UK folks to sign another petition.

Caroline Lucas, MP

What I want to achieve is for the Government to agree to carry out a review and impact assessment of the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. I support evidence based decision making and we therefore need to know whether the policies in the Act are helping, hindering or making no difference whatsoever to the stated aims. Some of the questions asked might be, does criminalising drug use actually deter people from taking drugs? And is prohibition the best way to keep people safe?

My own view, based on evidence from elsewhere, is that prohibition not only fails to reduce drug related harms, it may also actually lead to more of them. But  no other country has exactly the same set up as the UK, so we need our own independent study to judge the success of the Act in meeting its stated aims and to ensure future law making is evidence based rather than based on ideology.
